Yes, I do absolutely hate to use non-English Microsoft software. Why? Have you ever seen a full user guide written by Microsoft in Norwegian? There might be one for Office, but that's probably it.
Currently I'm trying to get a Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 back online after having messed it up majorly. The whole user interface is in Norwegian, and it's not always very intuitive to know what to look for, when the Administrator's Guide is in part Norwegian and part English. I click on a promising link in the guide, which says something meaningfull in Norwegian. Unfortunately, the explanation is in English. It's not a problem reading it, my problem is to figure out what Norwegian word corresponds with the English explanation.
And off course, trying to find info on the web is just as hopeless. How do you translate the Norwegian phrase "Et portalområde som bruker denne databasen finnes allerede"? I'd guess it's something like "A portal area using this database already exists". Apparently not, when I try to google for this, I get no hits at all.
So, I can see the usefullness of having the portal area of a SharePoint Portal in your own language, as the users want something familiar. But I'd really want to have the administration area in understandable English, please. Or at least have an easy way of switching it to English. Because now it's a mix anyway. Almost all error messages in the admin area are in English.
I'm not sure if the SharePoint editions for French, German and Spanish are better, as these are languages that more people use that Norwegian. I'm almost suprised that Microsoft has bothered to translate at least half of their Sharepoint Portal Server to Norwegian. Right now I think they shouldn't have made a Norwegian edition at all - or they should have done a more thorough job of it. Like translating the whole Admin guide for a start.
