Today I installed IE 7 Beta 2 for Windows 2003 server. So far, semi-good. The tabs are good. The GUI looks good, but different. The tools seem nice. I can export reports from Reporting Services to PDF, and the reports renders as expected. SharePoint sites also works, but you will be asked to run ActiveX controls. (Due to the Eolas case.)
But it does have some severe problems if you're running as a non-admin user, or starting IE with the runas command. On my computer I run as a low privilege user, with a local admin user account I use to install and fix things. This usually works out quite well, with custom desktop icons for starting a few handy programs with runas admin.
IE7Beta2 does not work very well with low privileges. The first time you open the program, you get a screen asking you if you want to turn the Phishing filter on and if you'd like to participate in the customer program. At the end, you have a button for saving your settings. Not so, if you don't have admin rights. It just sits there, not responding at all. When logged in as local admin (properly, not using Runas), this worked very well.
Also, trying to go to sites with a not entirely standard issue sertificate, you get a warning. You can choose to close down the web page, or continue to this website (not recomended). Clicking on any of these will not cause the expected thing to happen. When trying to close, nothing happens. If trying to continue, I just get an error mesage saying "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", with the url being "res://ieframe.dll/". Not very usefull... So right now I need to use FireFox to access our Exchange web mail... Great. (Well, FireFox does a fairly good job of rendering it, but you will lack some usefull functions etc.) When doing this logged in as the local admin user, I did get the dangerous site, when I clicked on the Not Recomended choise.
IE7Beta2 does not like to be started with Runas... The whole application just starts hanging. At first it seemed that there was a problem with the Windows Desktop Search or something. I usually have this running for my regular account, and turn it off for the admin account. I've had some problems with this before, when I had it running for both users, but it's been OK since I turned it off. Anyway, I turned it off for both users, and IE7 still hangs when I try opening it with Runas.
Other things that don't work as intended:
Some javascript code, like javascript:NewWindow('rapp2.html?id=56904'). Which is what is used in my company's eSupport solution. So I'll use my (now) trusty FireFox for that.
Actually, it seems that quite a lot of javascript related stuff doesn't work too well.
Update: The javascript issue also means that I can't log into my Hotmail account in IE7, nor log into .Text...
