Being in the US, Bernt wanted to get a Zune player. And he bought one for me as well.
Thanks, hun. He got the black, I got the brown, after having listened to the friendly sales guy at f.y.e in Seattle. (His reason was that the brown one looks more organic, in step with the whole Seattle environmental awareness vibe. Hey, I bought it, and I'm not even that fond of brown.)
So, after Bernt went to his training session this morning, I decided to fire up my pc, install the Zune app and take it with me to the Space Needle. I even copied music from my old mp3-player to the pc, so I could start syncing right away.
No such luck. When I fire up the zunesetup.exe from the cd that came with it, I was told I needed to do some updates. Then I check their trouble shooting page, and saw that the Zune can only be used on pcs running Windows XP SP2. Not Vista, and more importantly for me, not on Windows Server 2003. OK, I guess that makes some sort of sense, as it's a server OS and all. But come on! I've been syncing with my Creative Zen Touch for 2 years! It's not rocket science to make it compatible with my OS. The last piece of hardware I couldn't get to work with my trusted Windows Server 2003 was a keyboard from Logitech. Not a Microsoft product.
After having failed installing from the zunesetup.exe file, I explored the contents of the installation cd and found a file called Zune-x86-ENU.exe. I tried running that. It did slightly more than the first setup did, but then it stopped, and gave me this error message:
"Zune installer should not be executed from outside zunesetup.exe"
Oh. Thanks a lot. Yeah, I'm pretty annoyed right now. And I don't know what to do about it. I won't reinstall my pc with Windows XP just to be able to use this gadget. NONE of our computers run XP, they're either on Vista or Windows Server. So now I have a chocolate (or sh*t) coloured paper weight sitting on my desk. Yey. Lucky me.
Update: Once again I was reminded of one of the reasons I admire Bernt: He got my Zune to work. We didn't manage to install the Zune application on my PC, but he did get it installed on his Vista. And then he connected to my Zune and added some songs. Great. It's not so useless after all.
